Northern Mid‐Latitude Mesospheric Cloud Frequencies Observed by AIM/CIPS: Interannual Variability Driven by Space Traffic

چکیده
Abstract Recent advances in data processing from the Cloud Imaging and Particle Size (CIPS) instrument on NASA Aeronomy of Ice Mesosphere satellite allow observation bright mesospheric clouds at mid‐latitudes (<60°). When adjusted for evolving local time (LT) CIPS observations during its mission we find that frequencies these northern hemisphere show no trend 2007 to 2021 dependence solar cycle, although interannual variability is extreme. Rather investigate possible link with propellant exhaust orbital vehicles, typically launched lower latitudes. By filtering launch record equatorward 60°N using only those launches between 23 10 LT, a strong correlation observed mid‐latitude cloud frequency 56° 60°N. Meridional winds 92 km meteorological analysis system reveal morning occurred maximum northward transport. Based upon this combination high plus favorable transport conditions, it likely space traffic has influence clouds.

Observed Decadal Midlatitude and Tropical Atlantic Climate Variability
Two common indicators of Atlantic climate variability, viz., the North Atlantic oscillation (NAO) and the crossintertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) sea surface temperature (SST) gradient, are examined for their frequency characteristics and midlatitude-tropical links. SST anomalies north and south of the ITCZ are found to be uncorrelated on all time scales, while the sea level pressure (SLP) f...
متن کاملTropical–Extratropical Teleconnections in Boreal Summer: Observed Interannual Variability*
Maximum covariance analysis is performed on the fields of boreal summer, tropical rainfall, and Northern Hemisphere (NH) 200-hPa height for the 62-yr period of record of 1948–2009. The leading mode, which appears preferentially in summers preceding the peak phases of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle, involves a circumglobal teleconnection (CGT) pattern in the NH extratropical 200-h...
متن کاملObserved Antarctic Interannual Climate Variability and Tropical Linkages
This study reviews the mechanisms associated with Antarctic–tropical climate linkages and presents new analyses of the seasonality and spatial patterns of tropical climate signals in the Antarctic for the late 1950s to the present. Tropical climate signals are primarily communicated to the Antarctic via the Pacific–South America (PSA) pattern and the southern annular mode (SAM). The impacts of ...
متن کاملInterannual and Decadal Variability in the Tropical and Midlatitude Pacific Ocean
Forty-four years of mechanical and expendable bathythermograph observations are assimilated into a general circulation model of the Pacific Ocean. The model is run from 1950 through 1993 with forcing at the surface from observed monthly mean wind stress and temperature. The resulting analysis is used to describe the spatial and temporal patterns of variability at interannual and decadal periods...
متن کاملObserved and Simulated Multidecadal Variability in the Northern Hemisphere
Analyses of proxy based reconstructions of surface temperatures during the past 330 years show the existence of a distinct oscillatory mode of variability with an approximate time scale of 70 years. This variability is also seen in instrumental records, although the oscillatory nature of the variability is dicult to assess due to the short length of the instrumental record. The spatial pattern...
